As the 2008 National Concrete Canoe Champions, the University of Nevada is proud and excited to be the home of the 2009 Mid-Pacific Regional Concrete Canoe Competition. This year the Concrete Canoe races will be on Friday, as they have the last few years. Using this schedule will allow for better parking on campus and will allow the visiting schools a less clustered view of UNRs campus. In addition, this schedule allows for the Bridge Competition to have indoor arena style facilities to compete in. There are a couple of details that are important for competitors to know. First and foremost, the races are to be held at the Sparks Marina. The Marina is a man made lake that was once an open pit aggregate mine. As such, the marina is very deep and stays fairly cool throughout the year. It is a requirement that all race participants wear a life vest while in the water. Also, the weather in the Reno area is very unpredictable. Usually April sees weather in the 60's to 70's, however, it has snowed in April. It is recommended that the participants and spectators pack to anticipate any type of weather. The races are only cancelled when there is lightning or very inclement weather. UNR practices with neoprene gloves and boots, waterproof pants, and waterproof jackets. It is not required to have this equipment, but you may want to watch the weather and consider it. There will be safety boats on the water and we are planning on having EMTs on site in case anything may happen to any of the boats and paddlers. I hope that everyone is already hard at work practicing and is excited for this year's events! From all of us at UNR, we look forward to meeting you all. Best wishes and see you in April!
